Why isn't Durango's Free?

So I know they don't strictly mean the same thing, but ususually those who write an open source product write a free product as well.

However, your product is not free.

While it is true that your executable is freely availalbe from Adobe, and that your libraries are ''open source'' i.e. they can be downloaded and read by anyone, they cannot be compiled by anyone.

This is because, for whatever reason, you seem to be using the AdvancedDataGrid Classes which are NOT an open part of the Flex SDK.

Hence, atm, use of your product without (possibly illegal) modification of the source requires a fee of x$ for Flex/Flash Builder.

Can you change this?

Thanks.

Why isn't Durango's Free?

Hi,

It slipped past us that we had a dependency on a non-open-source part of the Flex SDK. We use the Advanced Data Grid in (at least, and I think only) the property editor. I don't know (yet) how difficult it would be to rewrite that part of Durango not to have it depend on ADC. I recall we tried not using ADC originally and it was too much work given the amount of time we had to get Durango out.

All of the code we wrote for Durango is available as a download, and I believe its open-source license lets you do pretty much anything you want with it (not being a lawyer, don't take my word for it!).
