CS4 Data Merge encoding problem?

Hi tried a data file as below:

@pix,symbol,text
C:\test1.jpg,●,Hello

When previewed, the symbol field is 'empty', the other 2 field is alright.

(● is just an example, will need to use other asian, japanese char as well.)

Can someone pls advise on this.

Thank you!

CS4 Data Merge encoding problem?

There are some known issues with Data Merge in CS4. Adobe has been working on it and word is they hope to have a fix out soon. Whether that will solve your particualr problem I don't know.

CS4 Data Merge encoding problem?

WOW.. that's a fast response..

As guess so, as i do not have this problem with my CS2..

But any way to confirm that?

Thanks!

All I can tell you is that from what I've seen posted here most of the problems are related to multiple records per page and lists that have null fields in them. Matt Laun has given an explanation, I think, for what's been happening in http://forums.adobe.com/message/2151663#2151663

Hi Peter

A quick scan through of your link attached.

The reported problem is due mainly with CSV and Excel.

But what i reported here is more of an encoding problem.

With just a plain txt file (no complicated formulas), the placeholder will become empty whenever there's a non-English character.

I wonder whether anyone has faced the similar problem.

I wonder if the problem is that the character is outside the ASCII range? Plain text files generally don't support extended character sets, as far as I know.

I don't think so, because the same text file as datasource works well with Indesign CS2 but not in CS4.

Well this is pretty far outside my real area of expertise, so I don't know what else to say other than to send the file to Matt. He might at least be able to tell you if it's the same problem they have been working on, or something new they need to address.

Peter

how can i send my file to Matt?

do you have his email or what?

Thank you.

He posted some instructions in the other thread, and you can get contact info by clicking on his photo.

Sure i'll try to reach him thr email.

Hope he can spare some time for me..

Thank you Peter.
